I would like to thank the team at Liberty Homes for providing me with a great opportunity for hands-on work experience through their internship program. As a first – year carpentry student at Samuel Robertson Technical Secondary School, I was given the opportunity to transfer some of the construction knowledge and skills learned in the classroom into practical experience. Thanks again to everyone on the crew for all their support!

The diversity in the construction industry is truly amazing. With so many different aspects of work, it could be said that there is something for everyone. This is what I discovered while at Liberty, as I was given the opportunity to sample many of the different tasks of a typical construction worker. From finishing, to flooring, to concrete forming and everywhere in between, I soon learned what was for me and what was not. In the two weeks I spent doing work experience with Liberty, I was treated with respect by Liberty’s friendly workers. Every few days I would be assigned to a new partner to work with on new tasks. Each person was patient and willing to answer any questions I had, and some took the time to teach me some valuable carpentry techniques. I must admit, I learned much more on the job site than I would have in the classroom. All in all, my experience with Liberty was a positive one. I strongly recommend any future students interested in construction to go on work experience with Liberty homes. The construction industry is thriving along with its demand for workers. So why not? Get out there.

My name is Derek Bloom and I've been working for Liberty Homes since the summer of 2004. I really enjoy what I do and the people that I work with. At Liberty Homes I have a chance to do a variety of jobs in the carpentry trade, ranging from outdoor to indoor work. Outdoors, I've had the opportunity to do a lot of forming, and even some framing. Indoors I do a variety of interesting jobs including finishing and completing houses as per the customers’ individual tastes. I've had lots of opportunities at Liberty Homes to improve my skills and learn the carpentry trade. Liberty is sponsoring me to go to BCIT for the carpentry apprenticeship program starting February 2006. My favorite part of the Job is watching a project develop from a set of plans into a finished product ready for customers to move into.
